← back to ALS trials

Subjects are being sought within the ALS Centre for the REVEALS study. Researchers conduct different lung function tests in ALS patients and assess which of these is most appropriate.

The aim of the REVEALS study is to determine the relationship between lung function, secretion management – by this is meant difficulty coughing up mucus, trouble with mucus – and respiratory tract infections. This will help to better guide the treatment of ALS patients in the future.

What does participation in the study entail?
The study lasts for 18 months. You will visit UMC Utrecht every three months for a number of tests around your lung function. These visits will take about 1.5 hours each time and will be combined as much as possible with your other visits to UMC Utrecht. You will also be contacted by telephone or e-mail every month, for some questions around your breathing and possible antibiotic use.

Who is eligible?
To be eligible to participate, the physician-investigator will ask you questions about your medical history and current health based on your medical record. You can participate if you have ALS and are over 18 years old. Also, you should experience some problems around your lung function, but not yet have Non-Invasive Ventilation Respiratory Support (NIV) via a hood, or tracheotomy – continuous ventilation through a tube in the throat.
