Palliative and supportive care
Palliative care in our society is usually focused on terminal patients in their final stage of life. However, patients with chronic conditions such as ALS, other incurable neurological diseases, and those who are no longer treatable also qualify for palliative care.
These patients have the same needs as terminal patients, but access to palliative care is often less straightforward for them. That is why the ALS League advocates for expanding palliative care to include supportive care, which focuses on symptom relief and addresses the social and emotional needs of patients.
Supportive care improves quality of life and helps reduce hospitalizations. It also pays attention to caregivers and the home environment. Supportive care significantly contributes to a dignified end of life—a humane solution to an otherwise unsolvable problem.
