What is ALS?

ALS stands for ‘Amyotrophic Lateral Scleroses’. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons. These are the nerve cells responsible for controlling your muscles. You can describe ALS as a disease that paralyzes your body starting from the neck down. Your muscles shrink and you can no longer move, speak, swallow or breathe. During this process almost all sensorial and mental abilities remain intact. Finally you end up becoming a prisoner of your own body without any chance of getting parole. ALS will kill you within 3 to 5 years after the diagnosis.

ALS is not rare in our society. The risk of developing ALS during your life span is estimated at 1/400. It affects mostly middle aged people who are professionally active, and consequently causes a huge social cost.
