Hiring home care or household help for someone with ALS can be beneficial, but it also brings challenges. It is important to first determine what kind of home care is needed, based on the disease progression, preferences, and financial resources. Recruiting the right caregiver can be done through recommendations, advertisements, or local organizations. When interviewing a potential home caregiver, it is essential to discuss expectations, duties, and responsibilities. Make sure all details are clear before hiring someone.

Tips in points

1. Determine the type of home help:

  • Personal help (helping with daily activities such as eating, going to bed, etc.)
  • Household help (cleaning, washing, shopping)

2. Make a clear job description:

  • Set up a to-do list
  • Have a job description signed upon hiring

3. Recruit the right caregiver:

  • Recommendations from friends, acquaintances, organizations, support groups, …
  • References from nurses, social workers, therapists, …
  • Local employment agencies and social services organizations

4. Interview potential home caregivers:

  • Discuss possibilities, challenges, and limitations
  • Discuss expectations, duties, and responsibilities

5. Discuss job details:

  • Use of car and reimbursement of gasoline expenses
  • Lunch provision
  • Day schedule and specific hours

6. Check references and licenses:

  • Driver’s license and professional licenses

7. Make clear agreements:

  • Salary, vacation days, tardiness, illness, and termination of the agreement
